Speaking of flowers…

Speaking of flowers, I wonder if the hyacinth’s I planted at Spencer’s Memorial Bench are blooming? I will be making a trip there tomorrow…not only to check on the flowers, but also because tomorrow will be Spencer’s 31st birthday. Or, it should have been. I will head to his bench to sit and remember…

Amazingly enough, the University of Georgia decided to honor the students and faculty that lost their lives tomorrow night at the UGA Chapel. Coincidence? I think not.

Me and the kids, our families and some friends will be heading over to the North Campus Chapel tomorrow to remember him. There is so much to remember…Spencer had so many endearing qualities about him. Not only was he my best friend, he loved our children whole-heartedly, was extremely loyal and thoughtful of his friends and others, and was a “man after God’s own heart”. I want to compare his faith to Abraham’s (but thankfully he didn’t sell me out like Abraham did with Sarah!)…and he had a love for God like David did (and thankfully never pulled a Bathsheba on me either!).

Jesus’s ministry started at 30 years old and Spencer’s ended there…or did it? I’d like to think that Spencer left a spiritual legacy behind…both in myself, our children and families, and by the example he set for others.

He was an incredible guy…one of a kind for sure. What with his long, curly locks of hair (I was jealous of his hair!), his earrings, stylish clothes, crooked toe, terrible singing voice (and perhaps even more terrible dancing skills…haha), his undying love for all things Phish and Led Zepplin, and more importantly his undying love and support of God and his family…there was much to love.

It seems like yesterday that I had butterflies in my stomach as I drove us to the Reunion Golf Club. I knew what awaited us, but he was none the wiser. With the help of many people, I had planned a huge 30th surprise party for him with over 100 friends and family in attendance. As I drove, I hoped I didn’t give away the secret that so many of us had kept. The party was a labor of love but I’m so glad that we had it. It would be his last birthday party.

Spencer, Happy Early 31st Birthday. You are dearly missed and deeply loved. We have not forgotten.

ps-here’s the link to the video that we showed at his party last year. Enjoy.:)
